Our Mountain Activity Section members are an active outdoorsy lot. As well as walking, increasingly, there are requests for group cycle rides. MAS Northern: “Chris, what cycling experience do you think people would need for these rides?”
Chris: “Just a reasonable level of cycling road confidence and a fitness level similar to that for walking. These are nice and steady medium rides, 25-35 miles. It is not a fast pace, around 9-11mph on average but can be a faster pace depending on the group. It’s always at the pace of the slowest rider.
Here are some suggestions of what riders might bring:
- Most important that the bicycle is in a roadworthy condition,
- water bottle,
- snack bar or fruit, energy gels,
- some money for a refreshment stop if the group wants to stop at a cafe,
- mobile phone,
- clothing appropriate for the weather,
- lights if the visibility could be poor,
- a smile and sense of humour!”
Please note: These are informal leisure rides and everyone who wishes to join in does so at their own risk. Chris is generously volunteering to lead these rides but this is subject to change or cancellation without notice and for any reason.
